01 College History

Jesus College, located in the heart of Oxford, England, was founded in 1571 by Hugh Price, Prime Minister of Elizabethany I, in honor of Jesus Christ. It is the first Protestant college established by Oxford University and the only one that has continued from the Elizabethan era to the present day, making it one of the oldest and most sacred colleges. Jesus College is renowned for its academic achievements and historical heritage. Its architecture is unique: the First Courtyard, built between the 16th and early 17th centuries, showcases Tudor architecture; the Second Courtyard, built between 1640 and 1713, blends various architectural styles; and the Third Courtyard, begun in 1906, features a more modern architectural style. The buildings from different periods complement each other, creating a unique campus landscape.

02 Academic Excellence

Jesus College was initially established primarily to train clergy, aiming to meet the need for dedicated and learned individuals to facilitate religious settlement during the Elizabethan era. Later, the college expanded its curriculum, initially including medicine and law, and now offers virtually all subjects taught at a university. It boasts outstanding teaching and research achievements across multiple disciplines, producing numerous distinguished alumni such as Nobel laureates in physics, including Max Boozius. Over the centuries, it has built an exceptional academic reputation. The college's faculty comprises experienced full-time instructors and industry professionals who provide students with profound professional knowledge and practical experience.

03. Library and Archives

Jesus College's main library is the Meyricke Library, while earlier pictorial books are housed in the historic Researchers' Library. Medieval manuscripts are in the Bodleian Library. The archives preserve the college's administrative documents since its founding, along with a vast collection of documents, photographs, and pictorials. There is also a large Celtic library open to all Celtic students across the university, and the John Wellingham Organ Research Library, accessible to all current organ scholars at Oxford University. The college also offers a self-service borrowing system: students can borrow books conveniently and efficiently through self-service borrowing.

Oxford has produced at least 12 kings from 8 countries, 6 British kings, 47 Nobel laureates, 53 presidents and prime ministers from 19 countries, including 25 British prime ministers (13 of whom came from Jesus College), 12 saints, 86 archbishops, and 18 cardinals.
